The NBI has helped thousands of people increase self-awareness and strengthen key relationships with colleagues, leaders, family members and more. In one case, the NBI helped mediate the relationship between two leaders who were having conflict over the vision and work of a leading organization. The NBI helped them to understand hidden areas of complementarity to be able to hear and empathize with each other’s perspectives. It also revealed areas of cognitive diversity that needed to be integrated. In the end the leaders were able to find common ground and leverage both of their unique thinking preferences to co-lead a successful visioning and strategy retreat for the organization.

In one case the NBI was used in conjunction with 360 interviews to assist an aspiring Chief Financial Officer to increase his leadership skills prior to promotion. The NBI revealed significant preferences for creativity, innovation and learning and also some significant areas which were limiting effectiveness. These included building emotional rapport with his team and being more decisive when making financial recommendations at board meetings. The leader ended up making concrete changes to how he presented at board meetings and developed his own way of connecting more personally with his team. As a result of his improvements, he was promoted to the CFO position.

The NBI has been used with thousands of teams. It helps to build psychological safety, unlock cognitive diversity and leverage the full talent of the team. In one example, a healthcare team was struggling with rapid organizational change, unfocused priorities, and a lack of clarity in roles and responsibilities. The NBI was featured in a two-day team offsite which created breakthrough results. The team as a whole demonstrated a high preference for creativity and innovation as well as relational tasks. However they were struggling with being able to focus on key priorities and implement clearly-defined action plans. By leveraging the NBI Team Report, derived from the individual profiles, they were able to focus attention in the areas that had been ignored. In the end they made changes to their meeting architecture to leverage more data, analytical thinking and accountability. They also developed detailed action plans with clear roles and responsibilities.
